Weekly Events for June 30th – July 6th, 2014

I think it is pretty safe to assume that most of the events this week center around our nation’s birthday. We have multiple firework shows all around the state and I will list a few here but I encourage you to call your local village, township or city office to inquire about shows specific to your area. Every week I ask that if you have an event you would like others to know about, please leave the information in the comments section for all to read.

I will group the firework shows together first:

  • Saint Ignace: Fireworks over the Bay – July 4, 2014. Various events throughout the day including a parade at 1 pm.
  • Pentwater: Fireworks in Pentwater (Charles Mears State Park) – July 3, 2014. A recreational passport is required to enter state parks – fee.
  • Jackson: Jackson Summer Celebration Fireworks Extravaganza – July 3, 2014
  • Boyne City: 4th of July in Boyne City (Veteran’s Memorial Park) – ALWAYS held on July 4th.
  • Grand Haven: Grand Haven 4th of July Fireworks (Waterfront Stadium Musical Fountain) – July 4, 2014
  • Traverse City: Traverse City 4th of July Fireworks (West Bay shoreline) – July 4, 2014
  • Houghton Lake: July Fireworks Display (Houghton Lake Airport) – July 5, 2014
  • Caseville: Caseville’s Fireworks Display (Over Lake Huron) – July 5, 2014

Other events around the state this weekend:

  • Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival 2014 (Battle Creek, MI)- This event is being held at the W.K. Kellogg Airport and will have a little bit of everything for everyone! Carnival rides, crafters, food vendors and, of course, hot air balloons. There will also be present the US Air Force Thunderbirds putting on shows.   • National Cherry Festival 2014 (Traverse City, MI) – This festival has everything from amusement rides to a farmer’s market to concerts to BBQs and more. Too much to list here so I encourage you to visit the website with all the information for you – www.cherryfestival.org. July 5 – July 12, 2014
  • Thunder Bay Maritime Festival (Alpena, MI) – A community event, this festival will let you enjoy live music, eat fresh fish from the area, and explore exhibits. Located at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center and it runs from 10 am – 6 pm. July 4, 2014
  • Oakland County Fair (Davisburg, MI) – The fair will give attendees lots of free events to enjoy, as well as, events that you can pay to enter in addition to your gate price. Admission to the fair is $5 to walk in the gate, $10 per vehicle which includes admission for all passengers and $5 for motorcycles that includes all passengers.   • Waterfront Invitational Art Fair (Saugatuck, MI) – Located at Cool Park from 10 am- 5pm, you can enjoy strolling along the Kalamazoo Lake and viewing original works of artists and artisans. http://www.saugatuckdouglasartclub.org. July 5, 2014
  • Flea Market and Antique Show (Marshall, MI) – Join Cornwell’s Turkeyville, USA for their monthly show. Wander around the grounds and pick from the wares of antiques dealers and when you’re done, enjoy a turkey drumstick off the grill. There is no admission for the antique show but bring your money for the food. And don’t forget to visit the store where you can buy bakery items, trinkets, and more turkey! http://www.turkeyville.com. July 4 – 6, 2014

TRAVEL TIP: Regardless where you go, you will want to take pictures – and probably lots of them! Depending on your camera, make sure you have extra batteries or that your chargeable battery is fully charged and ready to go. No matter how many times you hear this advice, it can’t be stressed enough. If you can afford another chargeable battery, I suggest purchasing one and having that ready too!
